My Journey to PEI: The Island that Inspired Wildflower Whispers

Prince Edward Island — the land of red sandy shores, swaying lupins, delicate potato blossoms, charming lighthouses, and everything Anne of Green Gables. If you are a fan of Anne or her creator, Lucy Maud Montgomery, you will instantly fall in love with this storybook island. And even if you are not, there is something deeply peaceful and quietly enchanting about this rustic maritime province that lingers with you long after you leave.

In the summer of 2024, I visited Prince Edward Island with my family — and unsurprisingly, I fell in love almost instantly. One of the main reasons I had longed to visit was my deep admiration for Anne of Green Gables and its spirited heroine — a story I came to cherish after moving to Canada, and one that reminded me in many ways of Heidi, a beloved part of my childhood.

Spending a week wandering through flower-filled meadows, red sand beaches, and charming seaside towns helped me understand both Anne’s wonder and Montgomery’s profound love for this island. Everywhere I looked, Prince Edward Island felt like a living page from the novel.

Walking Through Anne’s World

Our days were filled with quiet discoveries and unforgettable places that brought the story beautifully to life. We visited Green Gables Heritage Place, where Anne’s imagined home stands surrounded by whispering trees and garden paths. At the Lucy Maud Montgomery Birthplace, I felt a special connection to the author herself, imagining the landscapes that shaped her imagination and storytelling.

We explored the stunning coastline at Cavendish Beach and admired the iconic red cliffs that make the island so distinctive. Time spent in Prince Edward Island National Park offered long stretches of wind-kissed dunes, wild grasses, and endless sky — the kind of scenery that naturally invites reflection and wonder.

In Charlottetown, we wandered through historic streets, visited landmarks like Province House and St. Dunstan’s Basilica, and enjoyed the gentle charm of waterfront cafés and parks.

Other memorable stops included Basin Head’s singing sands, East Point Lighthouse, Avonlea Village, the Anne of Green Gables Museum, and many small towns that seemed almost untouched by time, each carrying its own quiet beauty. By the end of the trip, I understood why so many people return to this island again and again.

From Inspiration to Creation

This journey eventually inspired some very special pieces within my Wildflower Whispers Collection: Anne’s Wildflower Bouquet and a series of Anne-inspired wildflower crowns and hatbands.

I wanted these pieces to capture not only the beauty of the island, but also its spirit — whimsical, gentle, nostalgic, and filled with quiet joy. The bouquet brings together felt wildflowers lovingly chosen from blooms mentioned throughout the novel, alongside flowers that grow naturally across Prince Edward Island — Anne’s cherished home.

The arrangement includes:

~ Wild Roses
~ Primroses
~ Purple Lupines
~ Buttercups
~ Blue Asters
~ Wild Daisies
~ Purple Thistles

These are complemented by soft foliage and natural accents such as willow leaves, Canadian poplar, and billy balls to create a full, textured arrangement that feels both playful and timeless.

The flower crowns and hatbands were inspired particularly by this passage from the book:

“…she finds a golden frenzy of wind-stirred buttercups and a glory of wild roses, Anne promptly and liberally garlanded her hat with a heavy wreath of them.”

Each flower has been individually handcrafted using the softest wool-blend felt from my trusted Canadian supplier. For this collection, I also explored new techniques — carefully dyeing and curling petals to create more natural movement, softness, and texture. Exploring these details became one of the most creatively fulfilling parts of the collection for me.

A Love Letter to Wildflowers — and to Anne

My Wildflower Whispers Collection is, in many ways, a love letter — to Prince Edward Island, to Anne and Lucy Maud Montgomery, and to the quiet beauty of wildflowers that bloom freely across Canada, including here in Alberta.

Every piece is created slowly and intentionally in small batches within my home studio using sustainable materials chosen for their softness, durability, and gentle impact on the planet.

More than anything, I hope this collection captures a little of the island’s spirit — its windswept landscapes, Anne’s boundless imagination, and the simple pleasures that make life feel meaningful.

Kindred Spirits & Simple Joys

If Anne has taught us anything, it is to notice beauty everywhere, to cherish kindred spirits, and to greet each day with hope and imagination.

My hope is that this collection brings a little of that feeling into your home — a gentle reminder to slow down, appreciate nature’s small miracles, and believe that something wonderful may always be waiting just around the corner.
